EMERGENCY

CONTRACEPTION

Emergency contraception [EC] is not just a “morning-after pill.” Multiple emergency contraception options are available. EC can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.

It is provided in four ways:

  • using a progestin-only branded product such as Plan B OneStep® or Next Choice One Dose®;

  • using a product that contains ulipristal acetate, such as ella®;

  • using hormonal contraceptive pills (either progestin-only birth control pills or combined oral contraceptives);

  • or inserting a copper-releasing IUD (intrauterine device).
